Circuit Description
The overcrank protection feature (or starter lockout) is designed to prevent damage to the starter motor during hard start conditions. Excessive cranking of the engine can cause the starter motor to overheat, resulting in permanent damage. When excessive engine cranking is detected, the overcrank protection feature locks out the starter until the starter motor has adequately cooled, and is safe to operate again.
Component Location
The overcrank protection feature is controlled by the engine control module (ECM), and can not be modified.
Conditions for Running the Diagnostics
This diagnostic runs when the engine is being started.
Conditions for Setting the Fault Codes
The ECM detects the starter motor was engaged for a long enough period of time that continued cranking can cause starter damage. This cumulative time includes continuous cranking and/or a series of shorter cranking attempts within a certain time window.
Action Taken When the Fault Code is Active
-The starter is locked out and the engine can not be cranked over until the starter motor has adequately cooled.
Conditions for Clearing the Fault Code
The fault code status displayed by INSITE™ electronic service tool will change to INACTIVE immediately after the diagnostic runs and passes.
The Reset All Faults command in INSITE™ electronic service tool can be used to clear active and inactive faults, as well as extinguish the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) for on-board diagnostics (OBD) applications.
Shop Talk
This is an information only fault code, and does not indicate an issue with the starter.
