DIAGNOSTIC RESPONSE:
None
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION:
The Oil Life Monitor (OM) is part of the OEM 4th Generation Control System Prognostics Package. OM calculates the remaining life of the transmission fluid (oil) based on the established life for the required baseline fluid and is continuously adjusted for cumulative effects of parameters such as operating time, retarder operation, output shaft revolutions, and shift frequency.
When the remaining fluid life reaches approximately 1-2%, the SERVICE TRANS indicator (wrench icon in an OEM shift selector) illuminates, denoting a required change of transmission fluid. The indicator illuminates at each initialization of the TCM and remains illuminated for approximately 1-2 minutes after the first selection of a drive range until a fluid change service is done and the OM function is reset.
If the OM function is not reset within some period of time from the initial warning indicated by the illuminated SERVICE TRANS indicator, then a CHECK TRANS light illuminates indicating that DTC P0897, Transmission Fluid Deteriorated, has set. This indicates that the remaining transmission fluid life has reached 1 %. Reset the SERVICE TRANS indicator with the diagnostic tool diagnostic program or by pressing and holding the MODE button for 10 seconds. It may also be reset by selecting N-D-N-D-N-R-N on the shift selector, pausing briefly (less than 3 seconds) between each selector movement with the ignition ON and the engine not running. Finally, it may be reset with a SAE J1939 message.
CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING THE DTC:
Enabled by calibration
CONDITIONS FOR SETTING THE DTC:
The DTC sets if the OM function is not reset within 100 run time hours from the initial warning for remaining fluid life at 1-2% indicated by the illuminated SERVICE TRANS indicator.
ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE DTC SETS:
1. The TCM illuminates the CHECK TRANS light.
2. DTC is stored in the TCM history.
CONDITIONS FOR CLEARING THE DTC:
The diagnostic may be used to clear the DTC from the TCM history. The TCM automatically clears the DTC from the TCM history if the vehicle completes 40 warm-up cycles without the DTC recurring.
DIAGNOSTIC AIDS:
1. The OM feature is available with approved TES 295 or TES 389 (January 2010 and later) fluids and High Capacity Filters.
2. Required calendar-based fluid change intervals are not monitored by the OM and remain applicable.
3. Refer to Prognostics Package and Features for additional information.
4. Refer to Fluid Check Procedures for additional information.
NOTE: Fluid type must be set for January 2010 and later calibrations, i.e., TES 295 or TES 389 in order for oil life to be correctly calculated by Prognostics Oil Life Monitor. Refer to Prognostics Package and Features for this procedure.
NOTE: Fifty hours of TCM time must accumulate before another reset of OM is allowed, either through the shift selector method or by action request in the diagnostic tool. Programming mode “offsets” for OM are not affected and may be set to various numbers regardless of the TCM time.
NOTE: Refer to General Troubleshooting of Performance Complaints for indicator lamp issues. The diagnostic tool action requests, lamp tests, may be used to check functionality of SERVICE TRANS (wrench icon).
